Triage Nurse/Registered Nurse

Location: Burlington Vermont

This position provides clinical nursing care (within the scope of practice as defined by the Vermont Board of Nursing Practice) to patients of the Center for Health and Wellbeing (CHWB) Student Health Services, including Primary Care and Women’s Health. Provides triage support through phone and walk in care.

Essential Functions:
25% Triage patients on the phone and in person. Work closely with scheduling staff and give guidance on scheduling priorities. Answer health-related questions according to established guidelines. Provide respectful and confidential health care to all patients, valuing differences in race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, national origin, and disabilities.

25% Interact on the phone and in person with many different people in varying degrees of distress or need during a day. Serve as the point person and resource for clinical questions from front desk/scheduling staff; parents/families; patients; other CHWB staff members; and other UVM community members. Have knowledge of CHWB eligibility, student health fee, student insurance, CHWB policies and services. Communicate information about these services to constituents. Understand and adhere to policies regulating the sharing of confidential health information.

20% Review incoming fax correspondence (lab results, ER reports, FoneMed reports, etc) and direct as appropriate. Make notation in patient medical chart as appropriate. Process prescription refill requests. Correspond with providers, patients, and pharmacies.

15% Provide immunizations to students. Assist in the completion of immunization forms for students (ie: College of Medicine and College of Nursing and Health Science). Complete paperwork; correspond with students; maintain accurate records. Assist in influenza vaccine clinics outside Medical Clinic. Give allergy injections according to Allergy Clinic protocol. Function as clinical nurse for dressing changes, suture removal, ear irrigation, etc.

10% Perform screening/rooming of patients. Following established procedures, protocols, and standing orders: obtain brief patient histories, make notation in electronic medical records. Assist practitioners in medical procedures. Provide post-appointment instructions and education per provider’s order (wound care, inhaler use, etc.). Provide patient education re: crutch/air cast/immobilizer use, diaphragm, etc. Perform lab tests (strep, urinalysis, pregnancy test, etc.).

5% Participate in interdisciplinary teams and staff meetings, as well as divisional and departmental diversity trainings. Assist Nursing Supervisor. Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Education, training, experience:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Two to four years related experience. Current Vermont Registered Nurse License required. Clinical proficiency in telephone triage, walk-in triage, health care education and other ambulatory care clinical procedures. Comfort with and ability to ask very personal questions. Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to interact in a non-judgmental, positive, helpful manner with a diverse population. Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality. Demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion. Ability to type and use electronic medical record and email with proficiency.
