Background and-or Security Investigation required DUTIES:
Pharmacy technicians provide various technical support services within the pharmacy department. This position provides services related to inpatient and outpatient ambulatory patients. Technicians carry out the full range of technical support functions including processing and filling outpatient prescriptions for scheduled and non-scheduled federal legend drugs and medical devices, over-the-counter products and supply items; inpatient preparation and distribution of unit dose medications and ward stock items, intravenous admixture including cytotoxic chemotherapy, and inventory management.

Work assignments may include but not limited to Inpatient/Outpatient Pharmacies, including Window and Mail-Out Prescription Processing , and inventory stoc! king and replenishment as necessary.

Duties:
prepares medication for both the window and mail out prescriptions for final verification by pharmacist

performs a variety of complex technical functions which include, but are not limited to IV admixture, unit dose filling, and bulk compounding/prepackaging

filling prescriptions

service of Veterans either at pickup window or telephone assistance

refilling of ScriptPro and Pyxis machines

inventory control

training and service in narcotic vault as needed

enters correct drug, strength, dosage form, and quantity into the patient's medication profile (VISTA, CPRS). A pharmacist then reviews the medication profile for accuracy

other duties as assigned.

Hours are 8:00 - 4:30, with weekend rotation following training of 7:00 - 3:30. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. citizenship.
Applicant mu! st be proficient in both spoken and written English as required by 38 U! .S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
Must pass pre-employment physical exam.

Education or Experience . A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience.

Certification . Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
GS-4 : Education or Experience. Successful completion of 2 years above high school with courses related to pharmacy or pharmacy technology, or 1 year of general experience that may have included experience in another medical field (licensed practical nurse, laboratory technology, etc.) Successful completion of a course for medical technicians, hospital corpsmen, medical service specialists, or hospital training obtained in a training program conducted by the Armed Forces or the U.S. Maritime Service under close medical and professional supervision is creditable on a month-for-month basis for general experience. In a! ddition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Ability to process and fill prescriptions under supervision.

2. Ability to operate and maintain dispensing equipment.

3. Ability to operate pharmacy information systems.

4. Ability to maintain appropriate files.

5. Ability to prepare sterile compounds under supervision.

) Assignments. Pharmacy technicians at the GS-4 level perform all duties expected of employees at the GS-3 level; however, they are expected to exercise greater judgment, require less supervision, and to operate in accordance with all established policies, procedures, and techniques.

GS-5 - Education or Experience: Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included at least 24 semester hours of courses related to pharmacy or pharmacy technology; successful comple! tion of pertinent specialized training courses in pharmaceutical and ph! armacy services while serving in the Armed Forces is creditable on a month-for-month basis up to the 1 year of experience required for the GS-5 level; or at least 1 year of experience at the next lower level that demonstrates the core competencies (KSAs) described at the GS-4 level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAsin their resume or application:

1. Ability to operate and care for automated dispensing devices and equipment.

2. Knowledge of, and ability to perform, aseptic technique.

3. Knowledge of basic inventory procedures.

4. Knowledge of pharmacy information systems.

NOTE: Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at the GS-6 grade.

GS-6 - One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs in their resume or application:

1. Ability ! to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action.

2. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment.

3. Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents.

4. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products.

5. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts.

6. Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders.
